College Apartment
I am slowly working on a book about our business The Game Capital, and how it got started. I decided to share some pieces from it here while I am writing!
Jeff’s Living Conditions
I heard about Jeff’s living “conditions” in our apartment complex when I was walking home from the bars one night in college. I was walking with a group of girls that I didn’t know all that well. One of the girls had previously been my RA and I ran into her while I was out with a couple of other friends. For some reason, I decided to stick with my RA and her group instead of continuing my night with the friends I had started with.
Along the way home, one of the girls started talking about the guy that lived across the hall from her. She had only seen into his apartment a few times, but she said it was filled with stuff. According to her, there was just “stuff” in his apartment. “Stuff” from floor to ceiling. Just a small walkway for him to walk through his apartment.
“Friends”
I was somehow “friends” with Jeff on Myspace/Facebook, despite never having met him in person. In fact, he had narrowly missed being deleted from my Friends List a couple of times. I would have my pointer hovering over the “Delete” or “Unfriend” button, but something always stopped me from going through with it. Fate, I guess?
Apartment Complex
I happened to know that Jeff lived in her apartment building (I don’t recall how I knew), which was the same apartment complex as me. I had also seen a video or 2 that he had posted online of his incredibly messy efficiency apartment. It looked like an episode of Hoarders. Granted, since the majority of the stuff in his apartment was business-related, it wasn’t technically hoarding.
Nearly every inch of his apartment was covered in product and shipping supplies. No furniture, aside from his desk and chair, was accessible. Everything was covered, except for a few patches of open floor in order to take large steps to get around. His girlfriend at the time lived in the same building as he did, so he would just crash at her place instead of clearing space to sleep.
Future Husband
I remember thinking how weird it was that I knew (99% sure) who she was talking about. It made him seem more like a real person to me. Now it’s a funny little story to tell people about we sort of knew each other before we actually met.
To be clear, I did not feel any love toward him at that time. All I knew was that we went to the same university and he was incredibly messy. And that he had a girlfriend, whom I had almost sublet a room in an apartment from.
She had been looking to get out of her place to move into Jeff’s building. I had been looking to find a different apartment at the same time. I met with her to see her place and we ended up talking long enough that she started telling me about some of the goofy things her boyfriend (Jeff) did. I don’t recall much of what she said, but I was aware at the time that I was friends with her boyfriend on social media. So it’s funny to think that she was telling me stories about my future husband.
Little did I know back then, I was learning about my future husband’s living habits (yikes!).
