One-Hit-Wonder

This is Pop

You know how irritating it is when you can’t think of the name of a song that is stuck in your head? This happens less frequently now that Google exists, but you still have to know a little bit of information about a song, like lyrics or the artist, in order for Google to help.

The other day I was watching This is Pop on Netflix and randomly thought about a song that I used to like. I can picture where I was and what I was doing one of the times I heard the song on the radio, but I couldn’t think of what the lyrics were.

One-Hit-Wonder

I was also quite sure that it was a one-hit-wonder because I didn’t know who the artist was either. I stopped This is Pop and tried to search for the song on Spotify by searching One-Hit-Wonders from 2010 (the year I was pretty certain the song was on the radio).

No luck.

River

The only things I could “remember” about the song is how it sounded and that there might have been a river in it. I also felt like it was a song I normally wouldn’t like. I felt like I could remember angels being in the lyrics. I even googled “songs about rivers”. Nada.

I really sat and tried to figure out the song for a while. My husband asked what I was doing because it appeared I was just sitting on the couch looking at nothing while Netflix was paused. He was irritated that I wasn’t actually watching the TV because he had been relegated to the TV in the bedroom to watch his AEW wrestling.

Give Up

I told him my predicament and he was of no help. Eventually, I decided that I should give up trying to figure out the song for now. It might come to me within a few days. And if it did, I guessed that it probably wouldn’t be as good of a song as I remembered.

Bezos

I woke up a few days later and sat up in bed to try and stay awake. Once I was awake, and I knew my husband was awake, I decided I was going to play “Bezos 1” from Bo Burnham’s Inside (if you haven’t watched it, you must!). I was going to suggest that my husband, Jeff, play that song for his alarm clock.

Ghost

Well, on my Spotify home screen, it had some suggested playlists and One-Hit-Wonders from the 2010s was there. I clicked into it and the first song on the list was Ghost by Ella Handerson. I had a feeling.

I played the song and I knew instantly that it was the song I had been trying to figure out the other day.

I said “holy shit…” and Jeff asked what was up. I told him I found the song from the other day and played some of the song louder for him to prove that some of my lyric assumptions were kind of right.

I keep going to the river to pray’
Cause I need something that can wash out the pain
And at most I’m sleeping all these demons away
But your ghost, the ghost of you
It keeps me awake
— Ghost- Ella Henderson

I Was Right

So, I was right about a river being involved. And ghosts could be angels. And demons are the opposite of angels. It all made sense!

I was also correct that it was a song I wouldn’t normally like, due to it talking about praying and such. I am not religious by any means, so I usually don’t care for songs of that kind.

Was the song as good as I remembered?

No, but it was good enough for me to add to my playlist. Plus, I feel better now that I figured out the “mystery”
