Birthday Cakes

Birthday Cake

It was a few days before my birthday a couple of years ago.

I had started a tradition of getting my birthday cake from my favorite local bakery, Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe.

Ordering My Own Birthday Cake

In past years, I was able to order my cake online. I would even be able to add how I wanted the cake to be decorated and what I wanted it to say. Usually just some flowers and, “Happy Birthday Hilary!”. I order it myself so that I know it gets done. If I leave it up to my husband, he will wait until the last minute.

On this day, I went on their website and found the Order Cakes section. I was expecting the page to give me all the cake options (flavor, size, decor, etc) as it had in the past. This time, the page simply said they were “working on their online cake ordering system” and to call them with the order instead.

Ok. No big deal.

I went through all of the options, took note of my selections, and called them up.

Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe (UMBS): Hello, this is Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe.

Me: Hi, I’d like to place a cake order.

UMBS: Sure, what kind of cake would you like?

Me: I would like a marble cake with white frosting.

UMBS: Ok, what size?

Me: 1/4 sheet cake.

I do not plan to eat it all myself. I want to share the cake with my husband, family, and friends throughout my birthday week.

UMBS: And what would you like on it?

Me: Just some flowers would be great. In blues and/or purples.

UMBS: Ok, would you like anything written on it?

Me: Happy Birthday, Hilary, with one L.

This is about when I start feeling like it’s weird to order a cake for yourself. Especially over the phone.

UMBS: OK, anything else?

Me: That should do it!

UMBS: Great. When would you like to pick it up?

Me: Around noon on April 7th.

UMBS: Ok, and your name?

I had not thought ahead about them asking for my name…to them it sounds like I am ordering a 1/4 sheet cake (enough for 15 servings) for MYSELF.

Me: …Hilary (Embarassed)

A beat of silence on the other end (possibly imagined due to my embarassment)

UMBS: Ok! We will have that ready for you at noon on April 7th!

Me: Thank you, bye!

Laugh About It

When I told my husband, Jeff, and one of our staff members about this, it sounded even more ridiculous. They had a great laugh about it. I laugh about it too.

Jeff is the one that picks the cakes up, so at least I didn’t have to go in person to pick up a cake meant to feed 15 people with my own name on it.

Since this happened, I no longer order my own cakes. I let Jeff know what I would like and let him pick the decorations. He has done really well the past couple of years picking out the cake decor!

Last year, he told them I like penguins and wizards, so I got a wizard & penguin cake. And this year I got a Friends cake, which you can see a picture of in my previous post.

Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe

Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe has 3 locations in the Green Bay area. I highly recommend them! They are known for their award winning Kringles. Apparently they are the Best Kringles in North America!
